Smoking and increased risks associated with COVID-19
If you smoke you have an increased risk of severe illness with COVID-19. Your doctor would like you to stop smoking as soon as possible. Contact Hertfordshire Health Improvement Service on 0800 3893998 or text quit4covid to 80818 for telephone support and medication to quit smoking.

SHIELDING: COVID-19 HIGH-RISK/EXTREMELY VULNERABLE PATIENTS UPDATE
There has been a lot of confusion surrounding inclusion in the High Risk Group of patients who should be Shielding. This was due to conflicting guidelines and advice, and errors in the way the groups were initially identified. General Practice was not involved in deciding the criteria for Extremely Vulnerable/High Risk Patients, nor were we involved in the initial series of letters and texts that were issued in late March and early April. Some of these were sent in error; some patients who should have been shielding were missed off the list, and some who should not be shielding were included. Since then there have been several changes to the Shielding List, and we are attempting to update our own records, so there may be people added and removed from the list on an ongoing basis. We are following the guidelines laid out by the Government and also guidance from national expert groups who have made recommendations for specific conditions, such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Inflammatory Arthritis.
Only a very small percentage of our patients will be on the extremely vulnerable ‘shielding list’. This is because advising patients to remain indoors for many weeks or possibly months is quite an extreme thing to ask. There are risks to your physical and mental health by doing this, and as restrictions are lifted in the future those on the extremely vulnerable ‘shielding list’ may still have to remain indoors.
If you think you have been wrongly categorised, and think you should be on the Shielding List but have not received a Shielding Letter then please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. or fill in an "Online Consultation" form (see above) and we will contact you to discuss your situation. Conversely if you have been sent a Shielding Letter and do not think you should be on the Shielding List, please contact us in the same way and we can review your case and remove you if that is your wish.
Register for Help
The Government would like people in Extremely Vulnerable/High Risk groups who may need help with things like shopping or medical supplies to register here. You will need your NHS number which can be found on your prescription or a hospital letter.
Even if you are not on the Shielding List, you can still obtain help if you are worried how you will cope with social distancing measures or are vulnerable, and there is a link in the "Further Information" section below to local volunteer schemes. No-one should feel that they have been abandoned; there is help available if you need it.

Changes to the way we work
All medical problems are being triaged by a GP either by telephone or video consultation. If necessary we can then arrange a face to face appointment for you. If you have a medical problem we are still here to speak to you. Please do not delay seeking medical advice if you are concerned about a new or ongoing medical issue.
If you are feeling unwell and have symptoms of a high fever, breathlessness, a new cough, or a change in taste or smell, please stay at home, and avoid close contact with other people. The NHS 111 service has specific Coronovirus Pages which will guide you through what you need to do. Access these at https://111.nhs.uk/service/covid-19
All prescriptions are being sent through Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) to your nominated pharmacy. Any prescriptions not sent through EPS will need to be collected by your pharmacy from the practice. Please obtain your medication from your nominated pharmacy and do not come to the practice to collect your prescription. If you do not have a nominated pharmacy please ask your usual pharmacy to set this up for you.
Please do not order more frequently or in larger quantities than usual. Ordering more than you currently require will create pressure on the supply of medicines. In line with national guidance we will not be increasing the amount of medication on routine prescriptions, and we will not be issuing prescriptions early. Please continue to order responsibly for the benefit of all patients.
Fit Notes for Employers if Isolating due to Coronavirus
For the first seven days off work, employees can self-certify so they don’t need any evidence for their employer. After that, employers may ask for evidence of sickness absence. Where this is related to having symptoms of coronavirus or living with someone who has symptoms, an isolation note can be used to provide evidence of the advice to self-isolate.
The isolation notes can be accessed here https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-advice/. After answering a few questions, an isolation note will be emailed to you. If you don’t have an email address, you can have the note sent to a trusted family member or friend, or directly to your employer. The service can also be used to generate an isolation note on behalf of someone else.
Letters and other documents
We will email these to you. If you don’t have an email address, we will post these to you. Please do not come to the practice to pick up documents. If you need to send documents to the practice, please either post them using Royal Mail, put through the letter box at the surgery or email them to email@example.com
Dressings, Depot Contraception, Post-Natal Checks (8 week checks), Midwife Appointments, Smears
If you have an appointment in one of these categories then please attend the surgery as normal. The clinician seeing you will be wearing PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and will ask you to wear a surgical mask.
We will continue to offer Post-Natal 8 week checks for women and their babies during the Covid Pandemic. Childhood Immunisations from 15th April until 31st July are being given by the School Immunisation Service. This means that your baby will have a separate immunisation appointment around 8 weeks. They will also be giving any 3, 4 and 12 months immunisations, as well as the routine pre-school immunisation that are due in the period between 15th April and the end of July. If you do not receive a scheduled appointment please ring the surgery for advice.
From 15th June the local hospitals are starting to accept new routine referrals.
If we sent a routine referral early in the Covid-19 Pandemic, before the lockdown on 23rd March, it will probably have been cancelled. The local hospitals will be asking us to re-refer you, and this should happen in the next few weeks. You should receive confirmation from the hospital that you are back on the waiting list for an outpatient appointment.
We have also been holding some referrals back during the Pandemic, as the hospitals were not accepting new routine referrals. You will have been told that this is the case already. These referrals will now be sent, and you should hear from the hospital directly.
It is likely that waiting times for new appointments will be much longer than they were before Covid-19. This is due to the numbers of patients waiting to be seen, combined with a reduction in the number of appointments that the hospitals will be able to offer, due to infection control measures.
We have been reassured that referrals are being screened and prioritised by clinicians, with the aim of making sure the most clinically appropriate patients are seen first. If however you think your referral has been overlooked or your condition is deteriorating, then it is very important that you let us know so that we can take appropriate action on your behalf.
Attending the Surgery
Jersey Farm Surgery
If you have symptoms of a respiratory infection or a fever you will have been asked to make your way to Jersey Farm Surgery. Your GP will give you a mobile phone number to be used to contact the surgery to let us know that you have arrived in the car park. Please remain in your car until you have spoken to the GP and they have asked you to come to the main surgery door. The doctor or nurse that sees you will be wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) consisting of a mask, gown and gloves. This is to protect our staff from infection, and to prevent cross-infection between patients.
Harvey House Surgery
If you have been asked to attend for a medically necessary GP, nurse or HCA appointment, and do not have respiratory symptoms or a fever, you will have been asked to make your way to Harvey House Surgery. When you arrive please knock on the door and then please stand behind the Hazard Line in the Reception Area.
IF YOU HAVE YOUR OWN FACE COVERING OR MASK PLEASE BRING IT WITH YOU TO YOUR APPOINTMENT. If you have not brought a face covering you will be provided with a surgical mask. Please observe Social Distancing whilst you are in the surgery, keeping at least 2 metres from other patients, staff and the doctor that sees you (where possible). The clinician that sees you will be wearing PPE.
Please note that in line with Government and BMA advice, we will not be able to see you unless you wear a face covering or mask.
We hope that all patients will understand the exceptional measures that we have had to take to protect patients and staff from infection.

New guidance on face coverings for the general public in Hertfordshire
The government is now advising the public to wear a face covering in some circumstances, such as enclosed spaces where social distancing may not always possible. Face coverings do not protect you from contracting coronavirus. However, if you are infected but haven’t yet developed symptoms, they should help to provide some protection for people you come into contact with in a busy shop or on public transport. To help people to interpret the government’s advice and choose the right face covering for their circumstances, the Public Health team from Hertfordshire County Council has developed guidance for employers and the public. What is a face covering? A face covering is made of cloth or other textiles and covers the nose and mouth. You should be able to breathe comfortably through a face covering. You can use a simple scarf or bandana that ties behind your head or make your own ‘no-sew’ face coverings using the advice available online at the gov.uk website. Simply search for ‘face covering’. Face coverings are also available to buy online. A face covering is not the same as a face mask used within a health and care setting. It is important that face masks are only used by health and care professionals, to ensure that the supply of these masks for key workers who are at particular risk is not reduced. If you have symptoms of Covid, you (and all members of your household whether they have symptoms or not) must self-isolate promptly. Follow the stay at home guidance, and get tested as soon as possible if you are eligible https://www.gov.uk/apply-coronavirus-test Professor Jim McManus, Director of Public Health at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “Remember, face coverings do not replace social distancing, good hand washing and good hygiene (coughing and sneezing into a tissue, disposing of tissues immediately and washing hands), as these are the most important and effective measures that we can all adopt to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Wearing a face covering is not an alternative to any of these precautions. “We are urging people not to buy the surgical face masks or respirators worn by front-line workers in health and care settings because these are prioritised for those who are working in environments where the risk is greatest. People who have been advised to use surgical face masks or respirators by Public Health England, their health or care employers or the Hertfordshire Public Health Team should continue to use these.” The safe use of face coverings is crucial. Wash your hands or use hand sanitiser before putting a face covering on, taking it off, washing it and storing it. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth at all times and store used face coverings in a plastic bag until you have an opportunity to wash them. Clean any surfaces your face covering has come into contact with. You should wash your face covering after each use in your usual laundry, using your normal detergent. The government has advised that face coverings ‘do not need to be worn outdoors, while exercising, in schools, in workplaces such as offices and retail’. They are also not recommended for those who may find them difficult to wear, such as children under two, primary aged children who cannot use them without assistance, or those who may have problems breathing while wearing a face covering. The perception of risk and the level of anxiety about coronavirus varies between different people and there are different cultural attitudes to wearing face coverings. If people choose to wear a face covering within environments such as offices, schools or outdoors, it is important their wishes are respected. If you have been in contact with NHS 111 and had a Coronovirus Swab Test - please do NOT call the surgery for the result. These results are NOT sent to us as GPs - the correct process is to await a call back from the 111 Results Service. They will call you directly with your result -whether negative or positive.
We are advised that results will take 48-72h for processing. You will get a phone call back to you. The few specific national Coronovirus Swab labs and NHS 111 are exceptionally busy processing thousands of tests - and all these results will be called back to you. So you may get a call any time of day or night from them.
So please do NOT call the GP surgery for results as we do not receive them*
* in the first few days of testing, swab takers and 111 were erroneously saying that you can call your GP for the results. THIS IS NOT CORRECT.

As of 25th May 2018, new data protection regulations were introduced. Keeping your data safe and secure is our top priority. The changes didn't alter the way we use and protect your personal information, but it did make it easier for you to find out how we use it. There is no action that you need to take. The surgery has produced a 'Privacy Notice' to give you more information on how we use your information.
